Curtain linings and curtain Backings

fabric inspiration

With the exception of sheers, all curtain fabrics are enhanced when backed with a fixed or detachable lining. Lining not only adds body to the curtains, but it also improves the way in which the curtains hang. Linings also block out unwanted light and reduce unwanted noise. Lining your curtains will also help to reduced the fading on the face fabric. Several different types of linings are available and each is designed for diffeent job

Sateen curtain lining

Sateen lining is the most commonly used of all the curtain linings. They tend to have a shine on one side and are napped or duller on the back side. They are washable and enhance the the way the curtains hang while also adding extra insulation. Sateen linings are either 100% cotton or a polyester cotton mix.

Sateen lining is dressed to mean that they hang crisp and straight.

Polycotton curtain lining

Polycotton lining is the cheapest type of curtain lining. It is thinner than the sateen lining and doesn't have the same sheen. Polycotton linings are washable and will give the curtains a better finish than them being unlined at very little expense.

Blackout curtain lining

Blackout lining provided maximum light blocking capability. The lining is cotton laminated with rubber and total blackout or 3 pass blackout has been limited with 3 layers of rubber. These linings hang well, offer extremely good insulation properties and stop the light completely. Blackout lining is washable.

Thermal curtain lining

Thermal lining are the same as blackout linings but have only been laminated with rubber once and are sometimes called 1 pass blackout. They hang well offer increased insulation and also block more of the light than the standard linings. Thermal lining is basically a cheaper and lighter blackout lining. At curtain fabrics online we only sell the 3 pass blackout at present.

Interlinings

Fagile fabrics such as silk and taffeta's give a lovely finish when protected and wadded with an interlining. This is an extra lining that is fixed between the lining and the face fabric. Made with a non woven construction, interlinings add bulk and thermal control not only to curtains but also to quilts and bedcovers. They come in various weights and thicknesses.

Fused interlining

Fused interlining or super lining is a clever new product that is a curtain lining with an interlining ready attached. This means the curtains can be lined as normal but the finished product will be beautiful interlined curtains. The interlining is a light synthetic interlining. Fused interlining is washable.

Synthetic interlining

Synthetic interlining or domett is the basic interlining and is easily to work with a machine washable.

Cotton interlining

Cotton interlining or bump is the orginal and normally heaviest of the interlinings. Cotton interlining are like a heavy blanket and give the most padded effect. Cotton interlining need to be dry cleaned.
